MTV’s Video Music Awards were a big deal this year, especially for Olivia Rodrigo and her fans. Spectators and fans alike were anticipating Rodrigo’s first time attending, excited to see how many awards she could win. Her career took off back in January of 2021, after she released her first song, “driver’s license”.The song broke many records, as she made her big entrance into the music industry, releasing singles “deja vu” and “good 4 u” shortly afterwards. Her album, “SOUR”, was also wildly successful, staying on Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart for four consecutive weeks. Rodrigo ended up winning 3 awards for Song of the Year, Best New Artist, and Push Performance of the Year. Those who keep up with the music industry would agree that it made sense Rodrigo tied with Lil Nas X for most awards won this year, after her impact on the charts in 2021. Rodrigo was nominated for a total of 6 awards, losing two of them to Justin Bieber. What’s important to recognize is that 2021 has been Rodrigo’s first year in the industry, while Bieber has been releasing music since 2007. Additionally, she lost the Song of the Summer award to BTS, although this award is voted for by fans. Song of the Year and Push Performance of the Year were both awarded to “drivers license”. Rodrigo was one of the performers at the VMAs, singing “good 4 u”. She gave a big performance, belting out the lyrics to the pop-rock song, with everyone singing along. After the song came to an end, she appeared to smash the camera, which was a fun touch to her performance. Fans at home were really impressed by this performance, as one Twitter user (@NLiddle16) wrote, “@Olivia_Rodrigo did what had to be done with her first @vmas performance! I’m here for it.” Also performing was Camilla Cabello, Justin Bieber, Kacey Musgraves, and more. In her acceptance speech, she thanks her fans and tells them how “this has been the most magical year of [her] life”. She goes on to dedicate her award to “all of the other girls who write songs on their bedroom floor”. Rodrigo finishes with some heartfelt words. Her outfits for the night were bright and bold. On the red carpet, she wore a Versace dress featuring different shades of pink. She wore big, butterfly dangle earrings, which some fans thought may be a tribute to some of her lyrics about butterflies. During her performance, she wore a short purple and blue dress, featuring different layers that appeared to create a tutu-like effect. Rodrigo wore purple gloves that had laces on the side, and clips in her hair. The outfits seemed to compliment the edgy, trendy look Rodrigo aims to create, which can be seen in her music videos as well. At only 18 years old, Rodrigo has already made a great name for herself with multiple hit singles, a very successful debut album, and attendances/performances at significant music events, the VMAs being just one of them. Overall, she created a great look for the night, had a great performance, and everyone should be looking forward to her attendance at the VMAs in the future!
